I do not know a lot about guns, but I would venture to say they are stronger than a .22. A .17 hmr is faster, but the bullet is lighter. Both would be a good coon gun.

most dealers will have a 17 hmr,or can get you one. rossi makes one that is single shot and very economical.

You can order one from walmart for cheap. And a 17HMR is alot stronger than a 22. Check out the savages from their special order catolog.

Might wanna try a .17 Mach 2
It is a .22 Long Rifle case necked down to .17 caliber. It shoots a 17gr bullet but it is more powerful than the .22 long rifle.

17 HMR is a great round if kept within its limits. I've shot coons, cats, squirrels, rabbits and coyotes. All have fallen with little to no effort. I have a 22 mag, Marlin model 25N Bolt action....great gun . My 17HMR is a Newengland fire arms sportster model, black polyamere stock with bull barrel, single shot. with rings and bushnell 3X9 (I like to see the whites of their eyes!) Rifle was $129.00, scope 38.00 and 15.00 for rings......Love the sportster.... heavy enough with the bull barrel to just sit there rock steady when the time is right. Thats my two cents without any change.................
