Here is a pic of my primary go-to gun for hunting jack rabbits. H&R .223, Leupold 2-7 x 33, Harris Bipod, 45 gr Speer handloads.



And here is a pic of some jack rabbits I got on 6/26/04 in Goshute Valley, Nevada.



And trust me, there are MANY more where those came from!

Those are cool dude, do you eat them or just hunt for the pleasure and to control the population? How far can you reach out with that 223 and connect?

Nope, don't eat the jack rabbits. Leave them out for the coyotes to munch on. I was seeing insane amounts of jackrabbits. The night before on my way out there, I could see 4 or 5 in my headlights a lot of the time. They are everywhere. There is a guy that wants to save jackrabbits for this lady that has a raptor recovery farm so they can learn how to hunt again, but he wasn't at the guzzler project we did on Saturday, so the other wild animals got three free meals. Next time, I will come prepared with a burlap sack so I can keep the flies and stuff off and get them to the lady that has the birds.

I shot these guys at about 40, 75 and maybe 100 yds or so. I tried taking longer shots at some more, mabe out to 200, but I kept shooting just high. I need to go back to the range and confirm where the bullet is hitting at that range. I know it is dead on at 100, so I don't know why it is shooting high at 200. That load should easily kill rabbits out beyond 300 yds if I can do my part.

I use a remington 700 VLS in .223 topped with a BSA platinum 6-24x44mm target scope and handloads, I will post the recipe you can find the load on www.alliantpowder.com. Its loaded with a 52 grain sierra BTHP loaded with federal case and federal 205m primer with 28 grains of reloader 15 ( load data lists 28.3) but backed off to an even 28 for better consistancy I did not lose a terrible amount of velocity. after shooting 20 of these through a cronograph they average 3,396 fps but never below 3,393 fps or above 3,397 fps pretty consistant I'd say. These loads hold less than .5 moa at 100 yards and just a hair under 1 moa at 200 the gun is zeroed for 200 yards. and is 1" high at 100 yards and just under 6" low at 300 yards. I have hit many of Arizona jack rabbits from ranges as close as 50 yards and as far as 400+ yards. My other wabbit gun is a decked out ruger 10-22 its setup for 100 yard smallbore matches but also works alright for jack rabbits for 100 yards or under shots. My next project I'm looking at is a .223 wssm just waiting for more handload data to come out.

I like a 12 gauge with #6 shot for jacks! Just walk out there jumping them up, that is a blast!
