Red Fox

What is the best way to call a red fox? i recently shot a pup, and saw another pup in the same area, and I really want to get the parents, and the other pups. What is the best way to get these? Thanks

A lot of the calls will work on fox. Rabbit in distress, rodent squeaks, bird in distress. If your using an e-caller keep the volume down, the same go with a mouth blown call. Keep the volume down. You have to remember that a rabbits lungs are about as big as your thumb. So you don't need to blow a call like your trying to have someone in the next county hear you. Sneak into the area you want to call, and be quite coming in. After you get into the area you want to call, sit tight for around 10 to 15 minutes. And let the woods or area get accustom to your presents. They're are a millions set of eyes watching you. Then start your calling. Keep the wind in your face, use a good camo, and use some kind of backstop to break up your outline. Don't give up they'll come into you eventually......Good Luck Calling!

coyote caller gave some good advice for calling reds.
Another thing you'll want to do is take a nice, flat shooting rifle along. A 12 gauge works well for grays since they often come straight into you, but with reds, they often respond to the call but hang up about 100+ yards out. Don't try to call them in closer... When you see them come in and stop, it's time to reach out and touch 'em.

One thing I have had excellent luck with is a glass jar and a piece if styrofoam. Yes it sounds crazy but if you wet the jar and rub the styrofoam on it you can make a terrible high pitched squeal. Between myself and a friend we have successfully used this on reds approx. 15 times in 4 years. Had one charge in so close I actually got scared and had to stand up to stop it. Very inexpensive and foolproof. Good luck.

I had heard of that little trick before. Thanks for reminding me of it ekd4176. Maybe I'll give that a try this year.
