Default Coon Hunting Questions

I really want to start coon hunting and I'll pretty much be doing it by trial and error.

The area I'm going to be hunting at I know has a large population of coon, and I dont have dog(s) yet, does anybody hunt them without dogs? Also, does anybody use a call? Any suggestions, input, insight or comments will help me out a lot! Thanks in advance!

Grab ya a tape player and stick a Baby Racoon tape in it and play it loud and shoot them as they come in. Or if you prefer to spot and stalk then grab a flashlight and hit the tree tops, if it's legal where you are... Only way I know to hunt them without a good coon dog...

I call for coons, I use both an e-caller and a mouth
call. I have had the best results with a coon squaller
or a rabbit distress call. For e-callers the best tapes are raccoon fight,
distressed baby coons, or a
squealing bird sound. Coons usually respond quickly.
I don't hunt them with dogs but hear it is exciting
and effective. Any varmint gun will work on them. I
use a 12 gauge or a 17hmr. Hope this helps, Good luck!

Thanks for your help! I've got a couple friends back in Olympia that hunt with dogs, but I just can't do that (afford it) yet. I'm going to check out a couple other calls, I have a rabbit distress call but I'll see what else I can get ahold of. Thanks again!

what we do is just drive up next to a wood in the truck or walk them there and let em go. . . . .then u can tell by the sound of how they are howling if they are on the trail. . .it will take a little practice with your dog, sometimes they tree them a mile into the woods sometimes 10 ft into the woods. . . . .i would definatly recomened u buy a used dog that has been already trained and is good if are just starting or buy a pup out of a good family and run it with another dog that knows what ity is doing, but if it is a ouo it may be till his 2nd year before he really participates in the action. . .. .gool luck
