.223 vs 22-250

I am planning on getting a Savage 12bvss Not sure what the plusses and minus are between a .223 vs 22-250. I know the ammo is much cheaper for the 223. and yea, the brass is much cheaper for reloading. Any other reasons one would win out over the other.

I would choose the 22-250. Most recommend the .223 when Prairi dog shooting sense it heats up slower than a 22-250. I guess if you reload you could load the 22-250 down like a .223 when shooting alot at p dogs so it doesnt heat up so fast?

If you don't reload...and you shoot QUALITY ammo, the 223 isn't much cheaper than the 22-250.

I personally like the 223 better, but not by much. The 22-250 has a little more punch and is a little flatter. Like was already said, the 223 stays a little cooler it you are doing a lot of shooting.

I like the Black Hills 55gr V-Max bullets in my 223. They're $17.99 for 50. I haven't reloaded any 223's yet, because I'm getting sub MOA groups out of my $179 Handi-Rifle.

its prty much up to you on that. i jus bought a used savage 223 and shoots great. i jus like the 223 so thats what i got. 22-250 is a good gun also. i would say that if p dog hunting 223 would be more than good. but for yote hunting maybe 22-250 would get alittle longer. but i jus bought my 223 for yote. and i bought it from a taxidermist who shoots winchester jhp 45 grain holopoint. he said that worked the best for yotes. no exit hole. it put a small enterence hole and then exploded rippin all the innards up.

really depends what you are shooting with it. if you are planning to shoot foxes with it then i would say both are a good calibre as foxes are the only predator we have over here and it stops them pretty well

I've got the savage 12bvss also, but mine's a 22-250. It's a really sweet gun, you will not be disappointed. I like the 22-250 because I have it handloaded by a friend for really cheap. He reloads about 80 rounds for 20$. They are extremely accurate. The 22-250 is much faster than the .223, and very flat. you can get 4000 f/s out of it depending on how heavy your bullets are. I'm a little biased toward the 22-250 cartridge, but I'm sure the .223 can perform just fine once you get good with your gun.

My choice would definately be the 22-250, whether you handload or not.

But if you do handload, you can load up 100 rounds with V-Max bullets, Varget powder, and Win. LR primers for less than $15/100 rounds. Another thing to consider is that the 22-250 will be more versitile if you handload for it. If you shoot 55gr bullets and want to pop prarie dogs with less barrel heating you can easily load the 22-250 down to 3200fps or so. And then when you want to shoot coyotes you can punch the throttle up to 3600+fps and smoke 'em down there in a hurry. 22-250 brass isn't really much more expensive than .223 brass, and the 22-250 brass will likely be much more consistant being that you don't risk getting a bunch of mil spec brass mixed in with commercial brass. 22-250 is also typically very accurate, too.

I have the same rifle that you plan on getting in 22-250. I reload which is a must for gopher with well over 200 rounds a day.
If you looking for an accurate rifle and caliber to match go with the flatter shooting 22-250 in the Savage.
I consistantly reach out and touch gophers at 500 yards and over on a regular basis.
If you reload give this a try.
52gr Speer hollow points
with 34gr of 4064 IMR
touched off with Federal Gold Medal Match (GM210M) Large rifle primers.
Like with any load work your way up to the 34gr.But 34gr it is not the max load in the book.
When I worked up this load I shot 3 shots the last 2 I thought were flyers till I walked up to the target at 100 yards and noticed they almost went through the same hole. Dont forget some good quality high magnification optics if you plan on reaching out.
