Default 'Yote gun

I'm low on funds as I have recently purchased a T/C Omega and scope. So, though I'm saving for a .223, I do not own a varmint rifle. I want to try my hand a hunting 'yotes, so here is my question: Would a 180 grain bullet saboted in the .50 cal. Omega work, or would it be just too much power?

I am concerned about damage to the pelt and about the aroma of sulpher filling the woods after one shot.

Thanks!

Yes, you will have pelt damage, whether or not it will be too much to fix probably depends on how much bone the bullet goes through on the way in and on the way out. As far as worrying about the aroma in the woods, not very often will you call more predators in immidiately after a shot, not saying that it can't or won't happen, but not very often will another one come. So shoot to kill and then move on until another day.

I agree with Howler, it is way more gun than you need, but you can make it work. I would suggest a solid lead conical bullet like a maxi-ball or maxi-hunter instead of a saboted bullet. The solid lead bullet would be more likely to just zip through with less expansion than a (Im assuming) hollow point sabot round.

What about head shots? Is preserving the head important when it comes to selling pelts?

Yes, the face and the tail both need to be intact for the pelt to be sold. The face needs to have the lips, eye brows and ears all intact. WHY? Heck if I know, but I know that is a must to sell them.

Are shotguns pretty much useless too? I own a 16 guage, and a .410 (full choke).

me and my dad took our first yote with 12 gauges....he shot it with 000 buck and i finished it off while it was running with a slug. i just patterned sum 3 1/2" 4 buck and i could take a yote at 55 yards if i wanted too....

can yer gun shoot 3 1/2" shells? lol....i dunno anything about 16 gauges....do they make 3 1/2" for them?

i guess im not much help but if its legal just use a slug if not just get sum 4buck use a full choke and see how it patterns with the biggest payload u can get.

ch312

PS. ive seen .410 buckshot that has like 3 or 4 pellets in it. wut u guys think would be the max range of those? ive neever heard iof anyone usin them.

Your .410 would work, but only at very close range, say maybe 20 yards and your 16 gauge will work much better if you can find some shells that are at least 3", if your gun will take 3", loaded with at least 4 buck. You may stretch your effective range out to 40 yards with your 16 gauge. I know guys that use 10 and 12 gauge on predators and are effective out to nearly 60 yards loaded with 4 buck or 00 buck.
