Default First Coyote! But 30-30 ruined it. Need advice

Hello, everyone. Hoping you can give some advice. We have a coyote problem on our hunting land and we have determined to remove them when the opportunity presents itself while deer or turkey hunting. Well, I took my first one late Friday afternoon with my 30-30 and I am very disappointed by the damage done to the pelt. I was forced to shoot it twice, unfortunately, because my first shot on the trotting yote hit it too far back and missed the vitals. My question is, what is the largest calibre you would recommend for coyotes in order to preserve the pelt? I' m hoping to settle on a smaller caliber that will cleanly harvest a deer and also coyote without ruining it. I' m thinking a 22-250 would be good for the yote, but I' m concerned about it for deer. Opinions?
Thanks!

I don' t think it' s as much the cailiber that should be in question, as it is the type of slug you use. Afterall, it' s the slug that ruins/saves the pelt, not the caliber which it comes in.22-250,,243 270 are all good choices, just make sure whatever you choose is also legal for deer.

I use a .22-250 with 45 grain silvertip varmint rounds. This is a perfect setup for coyotes because the bullet makes a small entry hole and it "shatters" when it enters, causing it to kill the coyote but not leave a massive exit hole. If you plan on hunting deer with the same gun, I would go for a .223. Good Hunting!

Forgot to mention to check if .223 is legal for deer in your state. If not, .243.
