It is Memorial Day, wake early grab a quick bite to eat and make some tea to go. Drive to Johns and meet him and Dean for an early morning coyote hunt. We load all our gear into Johns truck and drive some 30 miles to the south to Oakland county to a dairy farm, we have not hunted there much because the area is full of antis and the farmer isn’t what we call all that accommodating.

But he has called and reported he has coyotes coming into his calving yard and where he holds them. Haven’t killed any yet but he wants them gone before they do. We go and set up not far from a wood lot and make it so the coyotes that come to the call have to cross a bit of fresh planted corn field. The leaves on the trees and grass make it difficult to see a coyote that won’t come into a field.

We get set up and start a fawn in distress sound and two decoys close together with feathers clipped on to make them look larger. Call runs nearly 15 minutes when we see the first coyote soon two more peak out and slink along the field edge to get where they could make a quick rush across the field and get the decoys. We work out who is going to shoot which coyote and watch John for the signal to fire. When he makes the motion we fire, sounded nearly as one, we had coyotes down and running across the field and back the way they came just to die in a few feet. John says for us to drag them to the lane and he will go get his truck so we can show the farmer we took care of his problem, as I said he isn’t very accommodating so we don’t hunt there normally unless the fur is good or he calls with a problem. Once the farmer sees the coyotes we drive back to Johns, load the coyotes in his front loader and take them back to the burying pit. Fur is starting to look better but not full summer yet and unsaleable.

We are just in time to do a little clean up and head to town and meet our wives for the parade still dressed in our camo so we blend in just fine. We are all vets ourselves and have just recently started to attended Veteran functions since the climate has changed and a VN vet can get a thank you from people and not spit on. We meet our wives as prearranged at the dentist office parking lot then walk down to Main Street, When the VVA group arrives in our area we join them to finish at the park where a wreath is placed in honorer of those who didn’t come home and those who have since passed on. With that over with we decide to go have a quick sandwich and return to Johns where we are going to have an evening cook out with the whole group, and sit about shooting the bulls.

Every one arrives around 3:00pm we have 3 grills set up and ready to fire up. We are going to grill some coyote back straps we had taken out of our freezers on Sunday. All the lady’s had fixed a favorite dish also. We had tuna casserole; pickled beets in pasta salad, honey covered baked beans, fresh potato salad of two types and more, if you left hungry it was your fault. With the wives and kids we have 35 people there and a great time was had by all with the last of us leaving at 11:00 after doing the clean up.

Do the wives eat coyote as well?

Of course they eat the coyote meat. Why would they not like a properly cared for and cooked wild critter.


Most even cook it, my wife objects to me cooking liver and onions more than cooking a critter.


Thinking of question and I must admit our friend mike has a wife that doesn't eat or cook any wild critter and also try's to stop their child from doing the same. They have gotten in more than one fight over it.
Mike has said she won't buy cook any kind of meat, KFC is fine and some of the other processed foods.
Mike carry's a little camp stove in his pick up and a few fixings so he can cook any fish he catches on the tail gate and also small game.
