1. Your "12ga., what was it designed for? Birds, self defense, combat, breaching, competition.........?
2. 2/34 #6 12 Ga. shells are designed for upland game hunting.
If you insist on packing your 12Ga. (possibly heavy and cumbersome) on a woods walk, for self defense, why not use shells made for it?
3. OO Buck is designed for self defense and will give you much better range than 5 Yrds.

As the name implies, 00buck was designed for deer hunting. If it were designed for self defense, it'd be called "00 badguy"
Frankly, just because the army uses something to kill people, that doesn't mean it's the best tool for the job (i.e. buckshot for self defense). Yes, 00buck does have a long effective range, but if you shoot a bear at 50yrds, nobody is going to believe it was "self defense".
The fact that light shot DOESN'T have range is one of the things that makes it nice for camp defense in bear country. At close range, ANYTHING out of a shotgun will ruin your day, but if you need a warning shot or two, the light shot gives you a "less lethal" option. I was had a bear and cub come in to investigate my elk in 1999 while I was quartering it. The guide I was with had a Win 1300 short barrel. He gave one shot in the air, and when she didn't move off, he peppered her hind end with 7 1/2's at about 50yrds, and she ran off. Yeah, it probably did a little more than sting, but it wasn't enough to have a long term effect, and frankly, I'm betting she wasn't coming over to play bridge.
At camp defense ranges, you don't need "range", you need devastation.
