Default Rabbit Diseases

If and when I shoot a rabbit, before I eat it, what are some diseases I should look out for and how do I identify them? Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Rabbits do carry diseases. At least one that I know of is warbles. They look like purple blood blisters on the hide. Your best bet would be to contact Natural Resources, or a game warden and ask about possible diseases in your area.

This is what I found about warbles.
Warbles are Bot Fly larvae.
They usually fall out after the first frost.

Tularemia is another one that they can carry and infect a person that is dressing one out. It's caused by a tick, but only 100 -200 people a year in the US are affected by it. One indication is funny looking nodules on the lungs.

I was always told to look for cyst or tumors in the chest or gut area. This can sometimes show that the animal is unfit to eat due to infection or other issues. Also look for flukes in the liver. They are a small parasite that can affect humans, look for little bumps in the liver. If you see them its best to just not eat it.

the one on the left is infected the one on the right is just fine. notice the odd bumps and discoloration
