Give it a shot. You want some kind of lock so it can't lift the door or so it won't open if the beast rolls the trap. Raccoons are one of the more underestimated critters in terms of strength. I caught a medium sized female in a cage trap one year. She tore the pan rod off and tied it in a knot. It was 1/4" cold rolled steel.
