Default The Woodchuck

If this sounds a little goofy, forgive me, but I was wondering if anyone has ever baited Groundhogs. I'm in northern Indiana and this will be a year to remember as far as numbers go. I have approx 6 different dens all within easy walking distance of the house and occasionally I get there just as somebody is coming out for the early morning or late afternoon look around and maybe a snack. Has anyone ever heard of or tried tempting them away from the den with like a carrot, berries or something? I'm a little spoiled because it's been relatively easy, but I'd like to get them coming out just a little more often. Any suggestions? John

I use apples, sliced or on a stick out away from the hole where they run, so I can video them, seems to add to the excitement. The ones in N.E. Ind. like mulberries, and will sometimes be in the trees with limbs close to the ground. I got one last week @ 232 yrds. with my .204.

Thanks Will, sounds like a good suggestion. I used to hunt them on the tracks years ago around Logansport and 50% of the shots were at long range and I just started using the deer rifle because the ranges were far too great for a .22. Around here though, I'm getting one shot kills with the .22 due to most shots are 50 yards or less. I'm even thinking about using the .357 with iron sights at two of the locations. I'll try the apples------John

Woodchucks are found throughout the state of Maryland with their range expanding in the lower eastern shore counties of Dorchester, Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset counties. They prefer to live along the edges where timbered areas are bordered by open fields especially fields used for agriculture. They dig burrows or tunnels underground that they reside in and hibernate in during the winter months. These burrows provide homes for other animals like skunks, foxes, opossums and rabbits.
