RE: New to Coyote hunting
.223 is hard to beat for coyote. Of coarse you can use big game rifles as well since you most likely use a few. A .223 55 gr soft point will generally not exit and will usually break up on a miss. So they are a bit safer to use. I also use a .17 rem for coyote when going into a known cat or fox area. The 17 centerfire will cleanly kill coyote, but does not tear up fox and bobcat like the 223.
The easiest way to get started is with an electronic caller. Eventually you need to learn open reed calls such as the crit-r call or tally ho to change the pattern. Closed reed calls are good as well, but do not provide as many animals in one call. Hunt with the wind in your favor and hide your self fairly well. Try late evenings or night if legal. Mornings can be productive, but only if they hunted all night without getting their belly full. Before a storm is the best time to hunt since they are adament about getting food and hiding out until the weather changes for the better.
