Default Wow!

I was up at my property in NY. At about 3:00 I was not seeing anything (Deer) and I did not like the way my climber was on the tree (Icould not go to high with it because it was not tight enough on the tree). So I climbed on down and did a little bit of tracking on my dad's doe that he had shot earlier.... It wasnt a great shot and it was with a .35 so not much of a blood trail.... I think she survived. But anyway, Im walking back up the hill to go back to the cabin (were on top of a small mountain=1420 feet... When my brother calls me, at the time he was in his stand. He says "Mike where are you?" Im like "Im halfway up the hill, why?" "Theres a coyote running straight towards you!" As soon as I shut my phone I here crunch crunch crunch. I look over and theres the coyote walking parallel to me at 20 yards! I take the 12 off my shoulder and put it up to my shoulder.... As I do this the coyote thinks he sees something. He looks right at me but doesnt seem to think anything of me. He then jogs another 10 yards, now 10 yards away. I whistle at him to stop him... As soon as I put my crosshairs behind his shoulder he takes off and went down into a ravine.... I almost took him but didnt really have enough time. It was such a great experience and it was such a beautiful dog... Black, gray and some brown/orange mixed in.

Now, every morning and evening we hear some coyotes out on or around our property.. andthere is tracks all around. I want to take out some of them so they dont kill the deer population too much... I was wondering, is it legal to bait coyotes in Ny, with a carcass for example?

I would try to call them in,you can get a mouth call for about ten dollars and you will probably be suprised at how effective it is if you have coyotes in hearing range when you start calling. You dont have to sound like an expert caller to call in a coyote, just be quiet while setting up and control your scent and dont let them see you walking in which sounds like you already got a lot of this going for you since you are already seeing coyotes while hunting, and most of all be ready when you blow the call, they can cover a lot of ground fast and be almost in you lap before you are able to raise your gun.Baiting is sometimes effective,I have bunches off trail cam pictures of coyotes eating a deer carcass tied to a fencepost but all are at night and we cant kill them at night here in KY,make sure to tie or chain your bait to a tree or post, they will drag a full size deer carcass off after they find it.GOOD LUCK!!

Yes, baiting for coyotes is legal in NY. Set up at dusk and try to wait them out (boring to me, I can't last more than 2 hours). If you need to pinpoint when they are visiting, set up a trail camera and note what time they are using the bait site. That is when you want to be there. You may want to call at the bait site as well (see Predator Xtreme Oct 08 issue: Bait & Pitch for Coyotes)
