hello everyone,
im new to the sport of coyote hunting and i have a question about a gun. does anyone use a h&r ultra hunter or ultra varmit rifle? my buddy had a couple he was test shooting and they seemed like very solid guns. i would really like to get one but i was wondering if the single shot factor was that big of a factor? one of the guns my buddy had was set up with a nice scope and bipod and it seemed like a very solid yote gun, but the only thing im not sure about is the single shot factor. the price are great on these guns and i just dont see it being that big of a hassle to reload after everyshot. i see all the hunting show guys using break action t/c rifles for deer and they all seem to like them. any input would be great.

I haven't seen a single shot on any preditor hunting shows.
Its what ever you want/like.
For yotes I would want a second or third shot.
For the other yotes, by the time you reloaded they would be gone.

My first deer rifle was a H&R 30-30 single shot love that gun. Lite, easy to carry and move around plus being a single shot makes you take a better shot IMO.For the $ their a great handi rifle .

havent heard anything bad about them. its always nice to have a couple backup rounds right there in case of a choked up first shot or yote #2 hangin around. keep your eyes peeled for a nice used gun or a basic savage in my opinion.
deer hunting and coyote hunting offer totally different scenarios. Deer hunting, you're out to kill 1 animal on 99% of your hunts. Coyote hunting, you're out to kill (possibly) many animals, and those many could all show up at once. SO, the questions youcould ask yourself, 1) DO I live in a coyote rich area where mulitple coyotes on one stand will happen a high percentage of the time, 2) will I be dissappointed in killing just one of the possible mulitples that might show up.If the answer to those two questions are both a "YES", than I'd suggest finding a nice bolt gun for your predator hunting.
This is not to imply that killing multiples on a stand with a single shot isn't possible, BUT having a single shot will make it a little tougher!

how much would one of these savages go for? i have a savage .270 package deal from walmart and i really like it so far and it wasnt that expensive...you can probably get those in like a .223 right?

actually i believe i do live in a pretty coyote rich area. i hear them howling every night and im in the process of moving into a farm house on 310 acres in sw wisconsin. the owners want them dead because of the livestock...they have already killed some chickens this year. i figure it would be fun to try to crack a couple yotes out on the farm. ive never really gone coyote hunting before (mainly a bowhunter) but i am really excited to try it out....thanks for the input.
I have killed several coyotes and groundhogs with the h&r or new england firearms handi rifles and several deer, just make the first shot count and dont expect to kill very many doubles. The two of these that I owned were very accurate the 223 would get close to 1/2 inch groups with 45grainers and the 243 would do less than an inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards. But as I got more into predator hunting and watched the second dog heading for the next county I decided to start using one of my bolt action guns.If cost is the factor save a little more and buy a stephens model 200 for around $300 bucks and have a very dependable bolt gun if you are just going for coyotes and such get a 223 or 204 or 22-250 if they have them,if you want to kill deer or such get it in 243and you can kill coyotes as far as you can hit them. And on the video Operation Predator II Al morris(I think thats his name)uses a T/C encore in 223 caliber.Good luck and have fun no matter what you use.I sometimes kill groundhogs with my ruger new model blackhawk in 357mag. with a 4X scope.not exactly the ideal varmint rig but I enjoy the heck out of making a 100yard shot on a pig with a single action revolver and I miss some but its fun.good hunting.
Use that .270! Nothing wrong with making it into a yote gun. Plenty of power and with the right load will be a flat shooting SOB.
If you really want to use that single shot, go for it as well. Take a shotgun and get the first one up close and personal, and pop it with the 12 ga. Then take the one futher out with the H&R.

im not totally opposed to throwing down some cash for a gun...i just bought a new ross cardiac this year and i would like to limit myself to one new toy a year but i guess 2 would be more fun. the reason i was wondering about the h&r is that they just seemed like a solid simple gun. i really like the savage acutriggers so im really giving them some thought.i might run down to the local sportings good store and see what they have. i have a 2005 fred bear bow and a brand new in line muzzleloader i want to take and see what they will give them for me and my plan is to use that for a yote gun. what would be a better caliber...223 or .243? i know a .243 is better for deer, which is a plus, but which one is flatter, faster, more economical to shoot?
