I logged another sweet memory away last night while hunting during a late season doe hunt here in Michigan. The red fox came out to my right out into the plowed dirt field.... doing what he does best...and thats hunting for food. With his puffy tail out and in full alert mode he made his way in a half moon shape out in front of me in the plowed corn stubble. Shooting light had started to diminish soI stepped out of the tent blind to have one more look...knowing my Leoupold was still capable of making a shot...I gazed around for a bit...and there was the little red foxmaking his way in my direction. I layed down on my belly and watched him through the scope at 80 yards. He was sitting in the field like a dog just looking around chilling out. I had him perfectly sky lined in the scope and I began contimplating taking him. When I made up mind that I was going to go for it he began to make a move in the opposite direction.
Now the fun begins...I used the palm of my hand and started making short squeaks (like a bird, rabbit in distress) Ahhhhh...yes....he made an about face and came right at me! 60,50,40,30,20, 15 yards he stopped and I placed the cross hairs behind his shoulder. He was perfectly sky lined and all mine. At the moment I started to gently squeeze the trigger I realized that 200 yards in line with my gun barrel was a house and I could see their flood light on. I did not take the shot...I squeeked again but he knew at that time that things were not right.
It's memories like this that make me realize the beauty of the outdoors...it made my night and I'll never forget the little red. I took a grey fox with my bow in 2002. He would have looked good next to him...but that's huntin.

Sounds like a good hunt!!!!! What type of gun were you hunting with? I'm hoping to kill my first Red here in the new year!

My best friend was hit with a shotgun slug many years ago. The jerk that shot him would have hit his own house if it hadn't hit my buddy. Hunting is about memories, not just the kill. Calling in that fox and letting him walk in the name of safety will make the memory of that hunt stand out from all the kills that you'll ever make. Congrats on a great hunt.
