Default Looks like I got some smart dogs. What now?

So I'm out coyote hunting this weekend and I see this dog come across a field at about 350 yards, Now I had just gotten settled in and have not yet made a call. So I thought to try to bring it in a little closer and let out a soft rabbit in distress call. The dog stopped for a second and then got on his horse like he was chasing the roadrunner and never looked back, and No. There was no chance he saw me or winded me.

So, obviously I'm thinkin this dogs been "educated" but what to do now?

Is this spot ruined for me?

What about other spots that may have "Smart" dogs?

Do I need to switch calls?

It's too early to start with a howler (I think)

I'm at a loss here and need some help.

I agree, I try to keep my howler for later in the season, kind of like an ace in the hole. BUT I do still use it this time of year. Not so much for howling, but instead I use it to do what I would call excited feeding/chasing yips. Little short high pitched yips. On a spot like you discribe, I might try a stand with nothing but coyote pup distress. Use it sparingly. Call and wait several minutes, try to get them curious enough to come to take a look. They won't come charging in, but they just might come to see what the commotion is about.
It does sound like that particular coyote had heard that song before. If so, then yip, it's time to throw him a differant bone.

That happens a lot here in SD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The yotes get hammered hard around here and they are smart. I talked to Randy Anderson at a hunting show about it and he recommended going to strictly the howler. Lone contact type howls with long pauses between and be patient.

He also said could try some deer distress or goat distress sounds but thought that howling was the way to go.

He is also pretty high on a coyote decoy when howling. An actual stuffed coyote, not a critter type decoy.
