Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
Hey I was wondering what everyone thought about the .17 hmr? One of my buddies is selling it and I'm needing a coyote, prairie dog, and just all around varmit gun. And what would be a reasonable price on it. Here is a picture of it.
it looks like thats a marlin its the exact gun i have and the scope looks like maybe its at least a 9X, so its the same setup i have exept for the fact that it does not have a bipod. its an awsome gun for prarie dogs. if you shoot yoties then its great for that as well espsially if you skin them and sell the fur. it leaves a very small hole. this is my favorite dog gun because of the range its acruite at 300-400+ yards as long as there is no wind. i baught mine brand new at dicks for 129.99 the scope i put on is a tasco i baught from walmart for 29.99 and i baught my bipod for 40.00 at gander mtn. for that gun if there is no rust and as long as he didnt abuse it or fire too many rounds i would pay 130 with the scope 100 with-out. the rounds are pricey but well worth it, if you can pick it up for that price i would do it then buy a bipod. and have fun!

I have the Marlin 917VRF and love it. It's a wicked little round out to 200yds with little or no wind.
Zero at 100yds the drop is 36" at 300yds, good luck hitting a Yote in the head at 400+ with a $30 scope.
As for a reasonable price, how about some info like make and model of the scope and gun?

I have one and love it. Grab it if you get it for a good price.
But before we get into a debate AGAIN, it is NOT a coyote gun!!! I know, I know people have and do kill coyotes all the time with the HMR. But it is not the best or even a good choice.
People that think (rimfires) .17/.22 lr/wmr/hmr are ok for coyotes.
ARE MISINFORMED OR WRONG.
Don't know where you get your information but it is WRONG!
Here is some info. for you people (Note the energy) this is the stopping power a bullet has. The next thing is not very many hunters can hit a head shot (egg) at 50 + yards everytime. Why use a rimfire and just barely get the job done and take chance of wounding and/or losing it.
.22 long rifle average velocity 1700 fps with 40gr bullet has 119 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
.22 WMR average velocity of 2000 fps with 40gr bullet has 160 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
36gr bullets little faster less energy at 100 yards.
.17 rimfires higher velocity less energy at 100 yards.
.22 hornet with velocity on the low end of 2500 fps with 40gr bullet has 261 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
hornet reload with velocity of 3100 fps with 40gr bullet has 423ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
45gr bullet at 2700 fps has 500 ft/lbs of energy at 100 yards.
This being said center fires have it hands down (hornet being the smallest .22 center fire comercially avalible.)
IMO rimfires for coyotes is like using a 7mm for elephants, under perfect conditions they will work BUT in hunting not all things are perfect.
PLEASE HAVE RESPECT.USE CORRECT CARTRIGDE/BULLET COMBO FOR THE GAME YOU HUNT.

State of Minnesota say I'M RIGHT!!
Is taking a Coyote ok with a 12ga. Sure at close range, not at 75yds. Am I going to take a crack at a yote at 400yds with my .17 no way, put him at 50 - 100 yds and I'll take a crack at him all day long.

I'm rollin' with the 917V and currently a cheap Simmons 8pnt. However a new trigger a Bushnell Banner .17 scope is on the horizon. I also have a Harris bipod on mine. For a rimfire I wouldnt trade it for anything in the world. Loves theFederal ballistic tip and will drive nails with the afor mentioned ammo.

It gets tiring people putting down the .17hmr... most of these people have not used it for hunting. The .17 hmr is perfect for fox, raccon, and the occasional coyote out to 80 - 100 yards.I use one in my area when I am restricted to Rimfire only and it gets the job done. Here in NY we are limited to a rimfirewhen predator hunting during when deer season is open in areas restricted to shotgun only for deer. At 100 yards my Ruger 77/17 groups about the size of a dime. When taking a coyote just punch thru both lungs avoiding the shoulder blade and he will not go far.
because of the range its acruite at 300-400+ yards as long as there is no wind.
You can't be serious! There is 35" of drop at 300 yards and I can't even find a chart to shows how much more drop out to 400 yards. And with just a 5 mph cross wind, there is nearly 20" of drift. SO what you're saying is you can figure holdwell enough to hit a target at and beyond 300 yards. Hitting a bird at 300 yards was luck also! Just for grins, ask him how much hold over he used!
