buy a savage .17 hmr. You will not be disappointed. I got my heavy barrell savage for 185 and bought a bushnell 6-18x scope from walmart for 130. Added a harris sitting bipod and it is a groundhog killer big time! a .17 is a much better gun than a .22

either go for the 17 hmr or 22 mag, depending on options you like, the 22 is a fun pop gun but only big enough for coon similar animals unless really close in, the 17 and mag shot stuff just as small with about the same damage, but you get increased distance, less drop, and you can pop stuff like foxes and bobkittys, just figure on price of gun, price of ammo, selection of ammo in your area

I must disagree. The 22 Magnum is much more effective on varmints than the 17 Magnum. I believe the 22 magnum has 50% more energy at 100 yards over the 17 Magnum. The 17 was a great marketing ploy, but it does not stack up.

If money is an issue, or you just want an inexpensive truck gun-then Savage makes a great 22 Magnum. And the Accu-Trigger is tough to beat on an inexpensive gun. A scopeof 12X is more than adequate on this type rig. 9X to 10X is actually more than enough for 22 Magnum distances. 3X9 makes a great choice. You can probably get the most quality for the least amount of money in a 3X9. Tom.

It more depends on what kind of Varmint you are wanting to hunt. For fox and similar size game i would get a 22 Mag or 17 HMR. I have both and usually pick up the 22 to hunt with. Dont get me wrong the 17 is a great rifle but accuracy is hard to get after 125 yards with 10mph wind. I know wehre my 22 will hit out to 200 yards and has more knockdown power. Either one you pick will bea great gun. Both of mine are Marlins. For larger game i have to recomend a 204 Ruger. I just sighted mine in and it is crazy accurate for an out of the box rifle that cost me $550 for the scope and gun. Here is a pic of 10 shots at 200 yards with my 204.
