Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
I just bought a Mosin Nagant Russian M44. It shoots the 7.62x54r rounds. I am told this is about the same size as a 30-06 round.
Would this gun be good for yotes, woodchucks and coons? Or is it too much?
I would personally say its over kill for coons and woodchucks. but i enjoy using big guns on woodchucks because they are worthless. The only reason i wouldnt use one on coons is because that would ruin the pelt. same with yotes except for nasty ones in which i either use my mosin or an '06

Yes, it is overgunned for your intended use. It will splatter anything small real bad. On coyotes, you will blow a huge exit hole. If you are into handloading, you could tame it down for smaller game but you are going to have some work there in keeping the accuracy needed for the smaller game. Use your "big boy" for the larger game and get a varmint/predator rifle for the smaller game and coyotes.
