Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
Is anyone using rifles in 22 hornet for predators and small game? What would be the max range on a hornet? I think it would be to big for squirrels. Trying to decide whether to keep an old M6 22hornet/410 or trade it forsomething else in 22 hornet orchange to a 17hmr.

.22 Hornet is a wonderful caliber. I have a Ruger chambered in it and I use it all the time. I have shot countless groundhogs with it and it will definitly anchor them out past 100 yards. I've never had a chance at a coyote with it but i'm sure that if you hit it where you're suppose to you wont have a problem. And if you do shoot squirrels with it, you better go all head shots. Hope this helps.

I agree with Fastbucknut, I love my .22 hornet,Mine isa Ruger topped with a Weaver 4x16.. On ground hogs its good all day long out to 150 yards. Maybe farther, but my fields arent that big..

hornets are great, supurbly accurate! if you hand load, they can be loaded as light as a 22 short or or much hotter than a 22wmr. a few posts above some one said they ancored a yote out past 200yds, nice shot! but its safe to say that they will reliably kill a yote out to 150yds.
I used Win296 in my hornet with a 10 gr charge you get 700 shots per lb of powder, heck of a lot cheaper than a .22mag and reloadable too!I only shot one yote with mine at 125yds.with a 40gr speer ,lung shot and he did a blackflip bit his shoulder and dropped dead in about as many seconds.Nice for head shooting beavers..Harold
If you wont be needing the added range of a .223 or 22-250, then the hornet is a great caliber. Around here, my hornet handles the majority of my shots.
I shot a largeOhio coyote at exactly 59 yards. It was afacing shot when he froze to look at my decoy. I know I hit him at the base of the neck and entered the chest with the factory, 46 grain hollow point. He spun like a top three times and ran off at about 35MPH. There was no blood trail. I tracked the coyote for over 100 yards and lost the track. For me the jury is still out on my continued use of the .22 Hornet instead of my .243.
