Default WHAT SIZE SCOPE?

I was wondering which size scope I should mount on my .223 for coyote hunting ( primarily in the north east ).
I was looking at a 3x9x50.
Any thoughts?

how far do you plan on shooting the yotes at? we have a 6-24 * 50 on our .223 but it's set up as a varmint rifle and it shoots great!! i'd go at leasta 12 power..

You might want some more power for predator hunting, I use a 4-12x40mm. Oh and in my opinion, 50mm is too big.

Predator 26-
I figured the 50 would let in more light for those low light situations.
Huntboy-
Up here in the north east most shots will be within 100 yards.

I got a 6-24X50 because i use it for coyotes and really small game as well. Its not bad, but if you get out beyond 10 power you need to have a quality scope that can take that kind of strength.

It depends on how far you are wanting to shoot.

A 4x12x40 should do you fine. I have a Bushnell 3200 Elite in 4x12x40 , a Nikon Monarch 6.5x20x 44 and a Leupold VXIII in 4.5x15x40 on my long range rifles, although I do have a Nikon 3x9x40 on my .243 and it works great for coyotes. These scope didn't break the bank and perform flawlessly at all ranges with exceptional clarity. You can find some great deals on scopes searching ebay.
I got the Bushnell for $279, the Leupold for $450 and the Nikon Monarchfor $459.
Keep your eyes open daily and you'll find good deals.

Yeah that's what people think. Your only going to see a differnce from 40mm to 50mm if you're using crappy scopes, like under $300. Also you want your scope as low as possible and 40mm gets you alot lower than 50mm.

I use all 3x9x40 scopes. plenty of power for the north east and plenty of light intake also. So far my Bushnell has been the best for light intake. My Maine vue ain't bad either.

I never spend crazy money on scopes, but if you are gonna go cheap cheap then I suggest getting a scope with higher power than you are gonna use.

cheap scopes most times drop off at the highest magnification setting. If you want a 3x9 then maybe get a 4x12 or something higher because even if it gets fuzzy at the highest setting, your 9 power is still in the middle and will look clear and work fine.

if you can get most of your shots within a 100 yards, thats awesome..some of our shots are about that, but many of them are 200 or 300 yards..not always the easiest, but we take what we can get!!
