Default Coyote help, This is crazy!!!!

Me and my dad went coyote hunting tonight at about 6:00 and we set up with the wind in our favor and all that good stuff and i started distress calling on my T.H.O. cottontail call. (Well before i go any further we also saw a yote across the field at our huntin spot about 1hr. before we went out.) Anyway..... We sat there for about 25-30 min and i howled a couple times. We walked down the woods line, saw tracks, got to the other side where we saw the yote earlier. By the time we got to the other side it was dark. So we was walkin back and all the sudden out of nowhere about 10-12 yotes started howling like crazy. My question is what do you think happened.... Did i proubably call them in and it took them a while to get to where we was, or did they run into other yotes or what? What set them off. I howled with them for a little bit then the quit as quick as they started. Help please

3 or 4 coyotes can sound like alot of coyotes. My guess is that it wasnt 10-12 but it could have been. Anyways, they probably scented you or saw you walking and started a warning howl. Sounds alot like a challenge howl but with more barks. Sometimes it will just be all monotone barks. They are basically saying toother coyotessomething aint right so stay away.

It's reallyhard to guess without seeing your situation/set-up, etc. BUT, it's a fact that sometimes, no matter how good of a caller you are, they just won't come to the call. You may have done everything text book, BUT if they aren't in the mood for what ever reason, you just won't bring them in.
When a group of coyotes do the yip-howl serenade, it may sound like a huge pack, BUT this time of year, they should be pairing up and not running in large packs like that. 3 or 4 together, more probable!
Or maybe you menat that there were several groups of them, not all 10-12 in one spot?

as the others said, coyotes have the ability to create more than one pitch or type of howl at once, so it could have sounded like a bunch but really was 3 or 4.

Without hearing the howls in question, it is hard to say what happened. But now you know where they are and can go back at them after that spot cools off for a while.

Be careful! I would never howl at them unless I planned to shoot. You may educate them and make it harder the next time. Try sneaking in and setting up near where you heard them and start your sequence before dark, but allow for enough time to call them in and shoot.

They might have herd you howl and come looking for you. When they did not see you they started howling to find where you were maybe.

We went back out there tonight and we was far enough away that they would have no idea we was there. And about the same time last night give or take a few they started again..... Last night when we heard it, it sounded like they was moving a good bit and there may have been 2 or 3 packs but there was definately 10-12 no doubt. tonight i could tell there was only about 3 or 4. Well like you said i know where they are. Another thing i was wondering is if I went where ive been hearing them howl(near the center of the woods) would they hear us coming or know we was there and not even come out, even if we came in around 4:30 or 5. They have been howling around 7:00pm. any thoughts? thanks!

How far are the howls. Yotes are paired up or are trying right now. I called in 6 yotes in about 6 hrs of hunting in the last week and a half using yote sounds howls, female mating howls, yote fights. They came running in. The morning is when I see the most. First light howl. Locate and move in.

My buddy just told me he heard the coyotes light up behind his house tonight about 10:30. So I'm going to go up there when I go home friday night. Going to start with some howls see if they will show up or howl back. If nothing shows after a few minutes I'll go to the hurt coyote/pup yips. Sound like the right approach?

Jake, how thick are the "woods" where the coyotes are?
Reason I'm asking is this. One part of calling coyote success is getting with-in the "comfort zone" of the coyotes you are trying to call. SO, if you can get into the woods where the coyotes are that you're hearing, and you can see well for maybe 50 yards or more, than I'd suggest getting in the trenches with them and then call them in. Now obviosuly, if you do that, then shotguns with 4 buck would be the weapon of choice. And you will have to make darn sure the wind is in your favor and be prepared for quick action. If you can sneek in without them knowing you're there, and use distress only, start softly if you suspect them to be near, I think your odds would improve!
