Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
I have started looking at different sites for tips and strategies for coyotes, but I have yet to find where it says what time to get into the field. Does it matter>
Do you get there early when its dark like deer and wait untill light? What is the best way(s) to do this? I am hunting in south western Iowa.
I live in Tx and I personally get out at about 11:00 pm I park in the middle close to an old shed of an oat field. In front and to one side is a creek where I have seen yotes trot down the creek bed. The other sides are the rest of the field. The field is about 150 acres. I have a spotlight with red cover, nightvision, handheld cottotail call, and my 7mm Rem. Mag. Then, just call'em up. Thats what I do. Good luck with the 'yotes. I hope I helped you find a good strategie. By the way you might want to go to a local sporting good store and get into a conversation with a hunter with your area and ask his opinion.

And when you call them in the spring jake, what sounds are you using? Any reason as to why they might be easier to call and kill in the spring? Also, after you kill a coyote in the spring, do you look for the pups and kill them also, or do ya let them starve? Just how many coyotes have you called and killed in the spring?

I haven't really seen many in the field but right before the sun goes down, I've heard is the best. Maybe thats just this area though.
In Iowa, we arent allowed to hunt with a spotlight of any kind, just from other reading on the web it seems like night, in general is usually a good choice. Obviously there are many of you who know much more that I do just from reading.
For some reason I dont think that I would enjoy hunting in the dark anyway, I like to be able to see whats going on all around me.

Here you can hunt them at night during the winter months (with a permit) using only a shotgun. The place of choice and near a lake or other large bodies of water. With the lakes frozen and bait out on the ice coyotes will come in closer, and you can see them on the ice alot easier than from the wooded areas.
