Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
I have seen the posts on the .17 HMR and did a search and nothing came up. Is anyone using or have used the .17 HM2. Am thinking of getting one but would like some opinions on it if anyone has any. Would use it for tree rats. Should I bother replacing my .22LR?

If you never actually shoot a deer are you still a deer hunter as oposed to a deer watcher?
I've used the HMR...It is very accurate and shoots MUCH flatter than a .22, making hits on squirrels much easier at ranges over 50 yards...
It does tear up a lot more meat than the .22, but if you hit them in the head or the ribs that's not an issue...
I have never used the Mach II, but the idea interests me...It SHOULD ruin less meat than the HMR shoot a LOT flatter than the .22 out to 100 yards..That might make it a darn near perfect squirrel rifle...
I have a mach 2, great lil rifle for tree squirrels, very accurate, if you can justify ammo costs to take squirrels to 100 yds, its worth the money.

The HM2 is a nice little round with twice the energy of you bulk .22lr. Aguila, however, makes a .22 hypersonic that beats the HM2 in energy and comes close in speed. If I remember correctly, the HM2 produces 2000fps and 204 ftlbs of energy. The Aguila Hypersonics produce 1750fps and 215ftlbs of energy. The HMR produces 2200fps (??? I think) and roughly 250ftlbs of energy. The Aguila's are running about $3 a box right now and work well in my old Mossberg 151b. I'll stick with my Mossy.
