Do I need a permit to go shoot any of the two. I want to go buy a rifle this week and just start shooting. The next hunter safety course around here isnt til March. I live in Southern California.

Ground squrriels and jackrabbits, no you don't have to worry about that.

I'm sure you'll need a permit/license to hunt either/both species. Plus, tree squirrel seson is closed, runs Spet. 9th to Jan. 28th. Jack rabbit is open year around with no limits, but I bet you still need a license to hunt them! This info. came from your states division of wildlife web site!
