Default night hunting tips?

I was just out back with a mag light and my 410 "coon hunting" but really just going for a walk hoping I'd see one and I jumped two rabbits but seeing as how Ireally wasn't expecting it I was caught extremely off guard and couldn't just pull the shot like I could in daylight. Luckily I chased them long enough for them to think they were in cover and stop and while I was trying to rig up a way to hold the light and my gun with my fore hand they calmly hopped into some stuff that was way too thick for me to think about entering.

So any tips? Would one of those tactical lights that mounts to the end of the barrell help? Do I really need a partner? (They're hard to come by for night hunting amongst my friends) I just hate that I'm not gonna get to have surprise rabbit stew tomorrow night.
