Default Training coon dogs!

What is the easiest way to get started on training a 6 month old "treeing Walker" puppy? Raw hides? What?

We use coon hides on a drag line. Never introduce deer hide or meat...big problems there. We had to re-train our 2 walkers. The previous owners had given up on them. We had to break out the shock collars on both of them. But I'll have to say, in our small area, they can't be beat! One other coon hunter has learned, don't get them out of the habit, it makes for very chaotic hunters !! HA HA Really fun 3am stories though! Good luck!

How far do dogs chase coons? I was just wondering because if there is posted property close by. You don't want your dogs to cross over. I would think you would need a large area of land to hunt to prevent this. Other than hunting SGL,how do you deal with this?

it depends on the coons. i have seem some in feb/(breeding season) run more than a mile. there is nothing you can do from stopping a dog from running a coon on someone elses property. just go retrieve the dog after he is treed and leave. the VERY best way to start a pup is to find someone localy who runs coondogsand have him show you the ropes.your dog is ready to be started. i have seen pups treeing on there own at six months.but dont get your hopes up with that. most come around at about a year (with proper training ) if they have a good background. trying to train a pup on your on is do able but extremely hard(i found out the hard way). do your self a fav and find someone close to hunt with.where you from?
her is a hunt from two weeks ago

At 6 months let him be a pup - get all the obedience training out of the way and get him used to the woods being loaded in the truck and how to come when called - I don't worry about training on coon till they are at least 10 mnths then its touch and go depending on the dogs interest. Don't push him or you'll do more harm than good I am training two dogs now and they are 13 mnths just starting to catch on and show signs that they be good. Be patient and Good luck

I have two Plott/blue mixes - they love the cats and are great on trail and tree when on a cat but the problem I am having getting them going right now is that they would rather be cat hunting. Tree'd a Bobcat in PA a couple of weeks ago while trying to coon hunt my property down in Elk county - Don't have too many bobcats in WNY but there are a couple - If they don't turn on to coon good by 2 I'll probably consider selling them to someone who can work them on cats - they just don't have as much intrest ina coon yet - I have them in the woods every couple of nights and they are showing signs of comming around - they will tree and hunt with my friends trainned dog and have had a couple of thier own coon too.
