Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
looking to build a rifle that i can hunt coyote, bobcat and fox with, but also double as a good whitetail, muley, pronghorn and hog rifle. i am leaning towards 6mm-06 or 257 stw. which one would be better, i know that both are reload only cartridges.
The 257's should work very well on big game. The 257 stw is simmilar to the 257 weatherby mag. And Roy weatherby used it to take larger african game animals up to cape buffalo. You can load the 257 cal. up to 120 gr. for big game or the 100 gr. is just right for deer with the barnes tsx or as small as 87 gr. I use the 100gr. barnes for everything. http://www.realguns.com/loads/257wm.htmAnd here is more info on the .257 http://www.shootingtimes.com/ammunition/ST257weatherbymagnum_031706/
So which ever 257 you choose 257 robert 25-06 257 weatherby mag or the 257 stw. You should be very happy with it.
Hope your not looking to salvage hides, after you shoot a fox or a cat with one of those hotrods about all you could do is tie flys.

I'd also suggest a 243 for an all around gun. I load mine down a ways from max load with Hornady 75gr HPs for varmints and it does a very fine job of dispatching critters, and it still shoots flat enuf to really do some long range poking.
