Ya, that would work well. I got one last weekend, my dog went missing for two days, turns out she was out in the woods with one backed up into a tree.... so I took and axe to the tree, got halfway through and he decided to come out... so I could see his nose... aimed a little high, and got him right in the head with the .38 special. It was awesome, he fell right out of the tree... big woodchuck too.

I'd upgrade a bit...this is what I use for woodchucks...a Remington 700 .22-250 restocked with a Boyd's Thumbhole Varmint and a Nikon Monarch 6.5-20X44 for shots over 200 yards and a 93R17BVSS with a 6.5-20X44 for shots up to 200 yards...both are equipped with Harris Bipods. The are glass bedded, reworked triggers and shoot sub MOA groups at 100 yards.[&:]

if its a fat groundhog, shoot it in the head or unload on it. otherwise just shoot it wherever

The .17hmr is more accurate and I quit shooting my .22's once I bought one. They are amazingly accurate in my savages. Mine will group in a dime at 100 yds and I have never seen a .22 of mine do that. They kill pdogs out to 150 yds for us.

i use Stingers and only headshots......i only use it for close up work and when noise might be an issue(houses horses cows etc..) but ive never had one get away after taking a stinger to the head.......out to 50yds its excellent....but does drop a bit but id say doable at 100yds with a good shootin gun and practice...

most certainly, i took a woodchuck out at 108 paces last summer with my .22 hit him center chest and he only went about 5 steps. this summer i'll be using my new 17 hmr, Ican't wait.

Well I took a shot at 40 yards and I think I missed him but my girlfriend says I hit him. Either way he ran down into the hole.

I think I am going to get a Savage .17 HMR.
