Default Red/White light in Ohio?

In Ohio according to the G.W. Officer I spoke with you must have a white light visible for at least 1/4 mile on at all times, However it can be faced in the opposite direction your hunting. My questions are he said I can still use a red light if I desire, so what are your recommendations on how I should do this? Does the white light spook the fox's, coyotes, and cats? Do I point the white light straight up? How do otherguys do this in Ohio? Thanks.
