Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
Was just asked to trap some beaver off afriends land. What pointers can you give me? I'll be using suitcase style traps that keep them alive so we can relocate them. Should I use branches/sticks soaked in Castor or Poplar oil? Any/all info is GREATLY appreciated!
You can do both. Beavers have a poor sense of smell, set the trap so the prevailing wind will carry the scent across the water. I have used this type of trap and had pretty good luck with it. Most of the time I baited with fresh willow sticks and birch oil, should be about the same as popular oil. If you are going to use castor scent I would build a castor mound in the trap to add a visual as well as scent attractant. I think the visual appeal works better with the beaver and the scent is just a little bonus.
You are set on relocating those Beavers aren't you!
Yeah, kinda funny, we had thought about it long and hard several weeks ago. Just wasn't sure where to get the beavers from. Then got a call yest. about trapping at a friends farm in Faquier. Heck of a coincidence
You can get everything you need here. I like the backbreaker castor lure by Charles Dobbins and the oils are under the Minnesota Brand Lure Ingredients tab. Great company and will get your oder out quickly.
Not to sure about that style of trapping but I do know that a good beaver is a dead beaver. As soon as spring starts I'll have to deal with them again...[:@]
