There are two types of snipe hunting. One is the fictional type where you do what SkyInTheWoods said.

The other actually involves hunting a snipe.

Not sure which one your buddy wants to take you on but the snipe is a small marsh land bird and is very similar to the wood cock. I have never hunted them but from what I understand they are a very dificult bird to get close to and are extremely quick flyers.

Read this if you are actually considering hunting snipe.

Here is a pic of a snipe.

the old common way is take a burlap bag,go to the wetlands with ditches. get in the ditch and hold the burlap bag open between you feet. hold it down at the bottom. the snip will not fly at night, they just run on the ground away from loud sounds.your friends go to the marshes and beat the brush and run the snip into the ditches.you wait till they run into you bag.when you friends get to you, you close the bag. the hunt is over.[]

the most inporant thing is you not move or leave you stand till they get to you.[8D]

You don't hunt birds with a rifle(caliber), you use a shotgun!
I have,nt shot snipe in years on my place, but I have them all over the place around the back pond. I use to use my Brn A-5 with Imp-cylinder.
You might want to practiceatshooting skeet or trap, snipe are not easy to hit!

We hunt a lot of Snipe here in north Florida, the real ones! We walk the marshes & they are a blast to shoot, by far the most challenge you can get with a shotgun. I was told the term "Sniper" comes from Europe where the best shooters were the guys who could hit Snipe, & they were called Snipers. not sure how true that is... But there are a lot of Snipe down here in Florida.

We hunt them along the banks of a river on the nights that they hold the submarine races. The subs pass by forcing the snipe out of the deep water and to the banks where they either flush or are grabbed by hand and stuffed into a burlap sack.

Best way to hunt a snipe

Snipe are nocturnal

You have to be really quite and You need a flashlight and a trashbag or a sack of some sort

Place the flashlight in the bag and turn it on

Now the snipe will be atracted to the mysterious light, so no gun will be needed, just use the sack with the light

They hide in bushes and high grass and soyou will see movement in the grass or bushes and that is when you make your dive onto them with the bag

Be shure to not let go

Good luck huntin
