Small Game, Predator and TrappingFrom shooting squirrels in your backyard to calling coyotes in Arizona. This forum now contains trapping information..
My boy, (11 yrs) was hunting during the youth only hunting day for deer, here in Maine this past Saturday. We didn't see any deer but we saw a coyote at about 200 yards. I "lip-squeaked" him in to about 125 yards and my boy shot him through the ribs. We didn't know this at the time, as we couldn't find any blood or hair. The 243/100 grain bullet didn't really do much damage, didn't open much and just poked a hole through him. (This bullet has taken 5 deer in as many years and performed great every time.) We didn't find him that night but we went back out yesterday in the rain. I didn't think we'd find him, but thought that it was a good chance to teach him how important it was to search for an animal after a shot. Much to my surprise, my son yelled to me from the edge of the field that he had found him.
To say that I was proud would be an understatement. He shot it, and found it. His first game other than a squirrel. This has really hooked him on hunting. We skinned it and are starting to tan it to a rug.
I can't tell you how great this was. He has been losing interest in hunting from not getting any shots. I was beside myself trying to think of ways to get him more excited about it.
Well, this did it, he's talking non-stop about hunting now, asking when we're going again. Love it!
Your son definately sounds like a boy that deserves bragging about, Maine. And, you sound like a dad a boy could justifibly brag on, as well. Very good hunting ethics you are teaching the boy. It is the way I was taught, and it does stick. The thought of giving up on trailing a wounded animal just because of bad weather never even occurs to me.

Nothing is better than when your kid has an experience like that! Tell him congratulations! Boil and bleach that skull. It'll be a nice keepsake to go with the hide.
