RE: Hunting pistols
.41Mag. or .44Mag. - either one will do the job for you. I'm partial to the .41Mag. myself. If you handload, take a look at the .45 Colt. It can be loaded up pretty stout,
and will handle about anything you like. Of course, you'll need to limit your choice of
gun to something like the Ruger Blackhawk which can take the hotter loads for the .45.
There are other handguns that can handle it, and these are noted in the reloading manuals. Then too, there's always the Cor-Bon ammo for .45Colt. It'll do.

pse-archer, not sure where or what your hunting, but i've got a encore pistol in 7mm-08, with a 4x scope, i love mine and have killed several whitetails with it, the only part i would not do again is i the break, other than that very pleased.

I like the.44 mag. S&W model 629 ported. You can handload them to hunt everything from deer to elk to bear..well at least black bear..probably grizzly but I think if grizzly was the target I'd look for something bigger..like a bazooka ha

RE: Hunting pistols
I would also go with the 44 for true handgun hunting. Rifle calibers in pistols with long barrels and big scopes really just seems to me like a short rifle, not to say that is not fun in its own right, I do want a Savage Striker in 308, but I really don’t consider that a pistol. The Ruger Super Blackhawk 44 magnum is an excellent choice.

RE: Hunting pistols
There are pistols then there are hand-rifles. I like and use both but For a pistol I would get the 44 Mag Ruger single action Hunter. For a hand rifle. (contender, striker), There are many good calibers but my pick would be the 7mm-08. If moose or elk were the main target then the Contender or Encore in 445 Mag or 45-70 would be a good choice. The 44 Mag is every bit enough pistol for everything but Grizzly. Only one pistol? 44 mag Blackhawk or Redhawk. IMO.

I like wheel guns myself.Single or double action.I have Ruger Redhawks,SRH and Super Blackhawks.44 mag or 454 Casull are my favorites. I put a 41 mag as a min.for whitetails.
