If i'm not mistaken Remington use to offer one in a factory load that was 55grns called the accelerator but it's been a while since i've seen them. I also saw them offered from Midway months ago but i can't recall how long ago it was but it was only the bullet itself and in bulk of about 500 per box. I just checked and can't find them anywhere on the web so i'm not sure if there's any around to be found or not. I don't know how accurate they would be but thats a pretty light bullet coming out of a 30.06. On the other hand if you handload then i guess anythings possible.

The accelorator is suppost to be as accurate as your rifle. If you normally shoot a one inch group with your hunting loads the accelorator should do the same.

Should and do are two very different things. In my experience a very accurate 30-06 was only getting minute of barn door accuracy with the 55 grain sabotted bullets. They aren't worth the time to fool with.

Factory loaded with .308 diameter bullets about the lightest would be a 125 grain speer hot core loaded by Federal.

Remington still loads the 55 grain accelerator bullet in the 30-06, .308, and 30-30. Midway has them all. The 30-06 product number is 220-009 should you want to try them.

For reloading about the lightest would be 110 grain bullets from Speer, Sierra, Hornady, Berger, and Barnes. It jumps to 125 grain after that.

A warning about the accleerator bullets is that they come out at something like 4100 fps and that translates to a crap load of plastic fouling inside your barrel that is a pain in the arse to get out.

Lapua loads a 123 gr. Full Metal Jacket. Good luck.

A 50-grain, full-diameter .308" bullet would be an abomination! With an SD of .075, it would have the ballistic characteristics of a penny flying head-first. I doubt if such a thing would even go 100 yards!!

What happens to the Sabot? Does the round have any rifling on it after it is fired?

I goes to sabot heaven (right next door to shotgun wad heaven). The bullet doesn't have any rifling marks on it.
