Montana public land for elk.

Do you know where Olive Montana is? There is not much there for a night life.
As for elk hunting with a general Tag(I assume that is what you have),you are SOL most of the areaeast of Billings is by special permit only.
The best bet would be get some regs and check around Red Lodge, that would be about the closest. If not a good4-6 hour drive should put you in some Nat'l Forest around Bozeman or the Little Belt Mountains.
Oh by the way there are some good watering holes in Broadus not far from Olive(Miles city also)
Good Luck

Thanks BBJ. I didn't know our general tags don't work in our area for elk. I'll have to find that in the book.
Sounds to far to go for one or two days of hunting and no scouting.
This my first time to Olive but the rest of the crew was there before.
Thanks for the watering hole report might find time to down a couple.

Olive, MT. I had to look that one up. You could maybe go to the crow indian reservation and they'd sell you an elk hunt for $5 or $10 thousand. You'reabout as far from general tag elk as you can be in MT. If you had known you could have least put in for some permits and increased you chance to hunt elk by about 1-10%. You're partners may need some talking too if they led you to believe Elk hunting would be possible based out of Olive. IF you tag out on deer early you can always chase some birds around there or go to the bighorn river and fish.Best of luck in whatever you try.

Well I geuss your right a general elk tag is good in 703.Never hunted it might want to give a FWP agent a call about the area and see what elk #'s are probaly pretty slim.
Most of my hunting in that part of the state was down around Broadus,Alzada,Biddle and Volborg.
Good luck
