I'm new to red fishing and I was just wondering what's the best bait to use. Thanks for any replies.

I fish for reds all the time (NE FL). As far as which bait or lure is best? Depends on the situation spoons, topwater (ie Topdogs), or the ole standby a jighead with live shrimp or mudminnows. There are times when the reds are really chewing when it really doesn't matter. I use live baits mostly (I fish inshore up in the flats) but keep a two rods handy one with a Johnson silver spoon and one with a topwater lure. Hope this helps! Gary

Do you guys always fish in the shallows for reds or do you go deeper sometimes? I have seen them in skinny water on trips to florida, but was wondering if they are fishable in other depths?

i fish NW FL. usually twice a month, gold spoons, doa shrimp, and sight casting in 18inches to 3 ft of water, fish come toward the bank as the tide moves in with the bait fish, i like top water but usually catch more trout than anything with top water

Carp to answer your question, you catch em in both areas. Some really big bull reds hang out at jetties that open to deeper water. In the ditch (intracoastal) large schools of big boys run in deeper water as do the black drum. But for slot sized reds I go to the flats casue it's exciting to see them tailing and feeding.
