It appears we have a case of redtide at our beach. Fish are dying and washing ashore. It has been years since we've had this and when it happens there is no fishing for a month![:@]
Sorry to hear that. What causes red tide, a lady at the marina said we had it here on the Chesapeake Bay about a month ago, mostly smalll fish, but tons nonetheless.
I have never heard tell of red tide killing fish off. Here when we get red tide all the clam flats are shut down. It makes the shell fish poisonish to eat, they claim it has to do with the amount of fresh water entering the bays here. I am not sure though...
The gulf coast of Florida gets it pretty much every year. What it is, is an algea that produces a poisonous toxin. It is around pretty much every year but not in large enough quantities to be a problem, sometimes there is an extremely large bloom (overgrowth) of the algea and that algea has a red color to it and turns everything red and starts killing things.
