Default No Salt Water.

I have never got to much much salt water fishing as the Dakotas are a bit short of Salt water. If I wanted to plan a salt water fishing trip for just general species like Blue fish and trout. Where would be a good spot. Nothing ultra expensive since I am retires now and don't have a big income. I did a little fishing , surf fishing while in the Navy in CA. But in those days we had to party most of the time and didn't do nearly enough fishing. I know there is probably a jillion good places to fish but where would a guy start? I am mostly a Walleye and Northern fisherman being from up North. Devils Lake is a good fishing hole up this way. I would also like to do some catfishing. We have good channel cat fishing but not much for any other kind of cats.

Since you're pretty far away I would make it a vacation. Spend a week in the Florida Keys and do a party boat one day a charter the next and rent your own boat for a couple of days. California is very expensive and doesn't have the huge numbers of fish that are available in the Keys. You could do a search on fishing in the Keys and get a ton of stuff.

Fishing in the FL. Keys is phenominal! I just got back from a weekend down there and caught about 55 Dolphin (Mahi Mahi). If you decide you want to make a vacation out of the Keys I can give you some numbers to some charter Captains on Islamarada. Shoot me an email and I will hook you up! Email addy k2soco@netzero.net

If I were you I would consider Mass. - Maine, Go out on a boat for Stripped Bass, Cod, Haddock, Tile fish, monk fish. Something you can and will enjoy bringing home and eating. Seasons are changing and there's always tuna and shark fishing,. Again something to bring back. If your in it for the sport and not the eats then you'll have fun no matter where you go.

You can do some good fishing out of Galveston, or Corpus Christi.

Dolphin (Mahi Mahi) is a fish that is extremely fun to catch and you can bring it home to eat. As well as snapper, grouper, etc... Backwater fishing is good as well for snook or reds just do not know what the seasons are for them right now. There are very few fish that you cannot bring home and eat in FL.

Thanks for the replies. I will have to map out a little vacation time for the wife and check into some of these places.

I fish outta galveston alot. Me and my dad got a boat down there. While it is good fishing, and very convienient if you live in Houston which is only about a 45 minute drive, i would not recomend a trip all the way from the dakotas to fish there. I do recomend taking a look at the rockport or baffin bay area however. They catch some monster trout down there. I assume you are talking about speckled trout. Since you wanna catch some catfish there are inumberable places in Texas to do that.
A list of the saltwater species you can catch in Texas (anywhere on the gulf coast for that matter)
-speckled trout
-redfish
-flounder
-tarpon
-sharks (last weekend my dad and I caught a 150 lb blacktip, ive been wanting to post pics but the file is to big)
-many many different species offshore
Better times to fish the Texas coast.
Trout- Best during the spring
Redfish- Best during midsummer to late fall

What id really recomend is looking into florida. They have all kinds of great fishing there. Ive never been fishing there but I see it all the time on the outdoor channel. I do not know of them catching many speckled trout there though.

About bluefish, i think they are mostly found on the east coast so if you wanna catch them id look into somewhere there.

Salt Water fishing in North Florida is hard to beat as well. Just look at some of my pictures on the below site. We are heavy Yellow Fin Tuna fishermen.

We have dolphin here and I agree. My post was in favor of going for cold water fish ,since he is used to the fish in the northern waters, Myself I prefer coldwater fish over warm. Esp when it comes to freshwater. I find coldwaterfish tastebetter, but this is only my preference, not law.
