Default .257 Elk Bullets

I have a .25-06 Ackley that a young hunter (my son) will be using on his first elk hunt this fall. Any recommendations on bullet? Thx. Roscoe

a 25-06 even ackley improved is a bit light for elk, I would deffinately use a nosler partition in the heaviest grain weight possible for that caliber or a barnes X bullet also in the heaviest grain weight possible. I was always under the impression that the 270 win or 7mm-08 rem were the absolute lightest but still ethical cartridges for elk. good luck

This should go over well with that bunch that is against using anything smaller than .30-06 for elk

Nosler Partitions are the way to go with small calibers and big game.

I got some 120 partitions and they seem to shoot well - I'm getting 1" groups at 3247 fps. I also see where Nosler has a 110 grain Accubond coming out sometime soon, and Swift has a Scirocco in the works . . . . This should really make the ".270's make me puke" crowd go off the deep end.

I would use a Barnes 115 gr. TSX BT, Swift A-Frame 120 gr. AF/SS, or Speer Trophy Bonded Bear Claw 115 gr. Good luck.

that 120 grain partition should work great looks like you are getting some great velocity with them and not to mention the accuracy thats awesome accuracy for a partition. all your boy needs is a well place shot in the vitals on his elk and you will be eating elk steaks for the next year.

Actually for use on Elk I would think a Barnes X bullet would be the best. Partition will shed too much weight which would be a hindrance if the wrong shot angle was utilized and heavy bone was encountered. You have a better chance at a pass thru with the X and a better blood trail if needed.

I killed my 1sy elk with Federal 120 gr. NP. She went about 28 yds and died right there!

And for the .270/.300 winmag for life crowd, there are some 6.5mm that hit harder then a .270.
