Default WHO HAS USED IT?

Has anyone used the 6.5 Barnes coated XLC bullets and what's your opinion?

I haven"™t used the coated bullet but shot a few deer with the original X. I pushed a .284 130gr X-bullet (not available anymore I don't think) at a published velocity of 3350 (didn't have a chrony then). My "not so spectacular" results my have been a cause of pushing the bullet to fast. On 4/7 deer I shot, I found copper flakes inside the deer. Obviously some of the "leafs" were tearing off. I did not loose any deer, most piled up; but three ran.

A 150lb buck ran 50-60 yds shot 1/4ing to me.

A fairly large buck for here (190 lbs), ran after an initial shot right behind the shoulder, clipping the left shoulder on exit ran about 40-50yrd b4 I dropped him on the run with another shot right in the 'ol bread basket (center'd up.... not good). He was dead on his feet I'm sure but being the biggest deer (horn wise) I'd ever killed didn't take any chances.

Another doe I shot (right behind the shoulder) ran over 100yds. It was toward the truck... so I was glad. I have NEVER had a deer run near this far with my 7mm rem mag and this was my reason for giving up on them.

However, A buddy shot these same bullets in a .280 rem around 3000fps (I'm guessing) and REALLY liked 'em.

After shooting gamekings, interlocks, & partitions at many deer. I prefer them, prolly GK the best but they may be a little soft (don"™t have quite the penetration) . Seems to create excess wound channels distinguishing deer quicker.

Just my 2 cents worth!!!! But is it really worth anything?

Cole, They have .284 140gr XLC BT
S.D. .248 B.C. .477

I'm wanting to load 6.5 Swed.
.264 140gr XLC FB
S.D. .287 B.C. .522

{Compared to .308 180gr XLC BT
S.D. .271 B.C. .552}

I used .280{ REM. EXPRESS} for along time, then switched to 6.5 Swed.
Also have 7mm REM MAG, but take it out west

By the way, good hunting Cole! Keep on doing it.

Barnes are great bullets,i use the X style. Don,t believe you need to use the XLC ,just an added feature hard core bench rest shooters think they help! IMHO i wouldn,t use them but its your choice. vangunsmith

Van,
Barnes does'nt list the X for 6.5, only in the XLC.
I was after the X also.

Why not try the TSX? Barnes lists both a 120 and 130 grain TSX in .264cal.

As to the coated version-- forget the insinuation that benchrest shooters think it matters. Thats way old news. Most are not shooting a coating and back to bare bullets.

In the meantime, FWIW, X bullets are controlled expansion and will penetrate. If folks would understand that part they'd be ok. If you like the performance of regular bullets and ballistic tip types, X bullets are not for you. They are for the few of us that understand it doesn't matter if the animal runs or not. What actually may matter is that fact that you don't get perfect shots or angles and some deflection is possible. While all that happens you still have to have enough of the bullet left to penetrate and most of folks like I, prefer 2 holes. With that in mind I"ve never seen a bullet perform better than an X. I've seen them kill nicely at 20 yards and less and over 800 yards. All with more than you can ask of a bullet. Thats not to proabable with a jacketed lead core. Though the bonded bullets and better jackets have come a long way since the days of the intial plastic tipped hand grenades.

Thats my worthless view anyway.

In the meantime-- take the advice-- if testing- go triple shocks now days.

Driftrider, the 6.5 140gr XLC is almost equel to the .308 180gr XLC..in SD and BC...
I was really asking the one's who shoot and reload for 6.5's...and
ever used the XLC's.
Don't get me wrong, I accept your info also, all info is helpful.

Thanks!

Rebel

Hope you get the exact info you chase. But in the meantime the triple shock is a bore rider and fouls much less, is allowed to higher MV at less pressure. IE if you were not aware it offers the same advantages of the XLC without the coatings.

FWIW I've shot the coated ones in 30 cal and they shoot fine. If that helps any at all.
