I bought some tempil sticks. At 650 and 700 degrees. I figure that would give me an indicator of my temp and from there I could note the dull red color and all. But I can't get the tempil chalk to stick to the neck. Any advise. I have read and read and heard people talk about holding in the middle of the case and when your fingers are and candles, and etc. I would like to know I am reaching temp first.
Also anyone know why the hornady kit comes with 475F tempilaq? Is 650F too hot?
I have done the finger technique but that seems very inconsistent. I never see the dull red wash people refer to. But this was with a candle not a torch.
Stick with the stuff in the Hornady kit.....do not hold the cases in your hand....I like to stand them up with primers removed in 1.5" water and just tip them over after the emp stick melts....it's ok.....it works...it's a lot of work IMO for the return!
Vapo, what I am saying is all I got is the tempil sticks. Would like to not have to spend the extra 35 dollars on a hornady kit. Anyway of get it the tempil stuff to stick? Also what is the correct temp?

I have did the john Barshness hold over the candle thing and drop it in the water. Not sure if it helped or not. I don't think so cause I only got one or two more loadings before necks split. But I do use FL dies usually.
Mossy after 3 or so firing of that 300RUM you will find the necks getting brittle and hard. Maybe loss of accuracy too. Maybe split necks too. So to get more life out of the old stuff you can soften up the metal by annealing. Basically heating to a certain temp and dunking in water. But you don't want to heat the shoulders, only the neck. So what vapo was talking about was kinda putting the case in water to the shoulders and heating with a torch. When you reach a certain temp, knock it over in the water.

On another forum, somebody gave a explanation for why the hornady kit is set at 475. Good info. They said you paint the body of the case with 475 and by the time heat melts the paint on the body the neck is up to 680 degrees.
Never really had to anneal any bras except 300 H&H when i fireformed them to 300 Super Mashburn. I Just annealed them with a torch and tipped them in the water bath. vangunsmith
