I'm going for elk in the fall and wanted to start experimenting with some different loads. I hear people talking about the (140 gr.) failsafe bullets, but wanted to get somemore opinions. I would like something that would hold a good trajectory out to 300yds.

I found this load in "The Complete Reloading Manual for the Weatherby Magnums" under the Nosler Bullets section. If this load works out for you, your elk won't know what hit him. Make sure you start at MIN..
With this bullet's (SD), and integrity you will have all the penetration needed at 300 yds. At 300 yds. you will still have 2149 ft/lb. If you were to set your scope 3.4" high at 100 yds., at 200 yds. you will be 4.2" high, and at 300 yds. you will be dead on. The Maximum Point Blank Range (MPBR) on a mature bull elk is 8" above the center of the animal, and 8" below the center of the animal's body. You will be well within MPBR for elk. Good luck.

When I think of all the elk killed with a 130 grain bullet out of a .270 Winchester, I belive you are thinkin' along the correct lines, but usin' a 130 Partition will allow you to get every bit of advantage your Weatherby has designed into it, with little if any chance of a lost animal, due to bullet performance.
One of the big problems is loadin' a .270 down to imitate a .30-06 or 7x57 mauser by usin' a heavy bullet. The .270 is made for speed, if you want heavy bullets get somethin' else. [8D]

I shoot a 270 Wby and many more of there cart. Here is a load for you. First load is for H 4831 powder,70gr (max load) 150gr bullet,i prefer speer or sierra (boat tails are better) it will give you a 3124 fps. If you want another load for the 150gr is H4350 67 gr will give you a 3150 fps. I would suggest using the 150 gr. for elk and the standard 270 does shoot the 130 or 150 gr bullet.I,ve used both in the WBY and the 270 Win. Ive preferred the 150 for either one. The 130 is a little light for elk but can be use. if you want a load for it one is, H4831 74grs (max) and it will give you a 3375fps,or H4350 68grs (max with a 3345fps. hope this helpled out and when you connect with an elk let us in this form know which one you got him with. vangunsmith
jj I cant speak for the actual powders and weights of charges for your gun, I havent reloaded in a decade and never did for a 270 Wby (but I loaded tons of 7mags and they typically do whatever the 270 and 7mm Wby will do). Go with slower powders and if your gun is a Mark V (or another make that is freebored) then consider sticking with cartridge OAL as per Wbys website/reloading manual.
As for the FailSafe I have a fair amount of experience with the 140 FailSafe in one of my 7mags. They are the Winchester Supreme offering and they are AWESOME bullets. I chose it several years ago for that gun because no one offered Barnes X bullets over the counter at that time. I will go against the grain here and advise the Barnes Xbullet or FailSafe over bullets like Partitions, Accubonds, Trophy Bonded etc... The X and FailSafes will simply out penetrate even heavier bullets like the Partitions because they dont typically expand as large thereby they don't shed velocity as much.
For "premium bullets" like the Parts, Accubonds etc then yeah I would recommend sticking with 150s in the 270 Wby. But I wouldnt hesitate to drop back too the 130, 140 range with real drivers like the Xbullets and FailSafes. That being said, a 150 Triple Shock would be "DA CATS AZZ" in a 270 WBY for elk!!! You just can't over penetrate an elk.
I agree. I absolutely love the gun. It's a Winchester with the pre-64 action. Although I haven't shot an elk with it yet, I assume it will do the job...and then some......
