Kinda one of those "curiosity killed the cat" things really. I was going through my muzzle loader bullets I had laying around, and came across my Nosler Partition 260 grain sabots. I thought, "hmm, wonder what the diameter is?" Well, they are .451, same as the 45 ACP, Casull, etc. I thought I might make a dummy up for the ACP and see if it would chamber. It does. Also, I looked in my Speer manual, and they list a 260 grain soft point for the ACP. Has anybody loaded the Partition or any other heavy weight (above 230 grs) in the 45? How has it done for you? I can't legally use the 45 for hunting here in Nevada, but figured a nice heavy bullet would be good for packing with me while on fishing trips in the summer in case I run into a mountain lion. Any thoughts? Just curious!

I use the same 44 mag XTP's and Partitons for both my muzzleloader and my pistols. Same bullet for me. No problems. I am not sure about the 45 ACP. Might be a tad risky. Maybe not. Your not going to have much velocity to fully ultilize either bullets in a 45ACP like you would with a 454 or a 44mag. I doubt they would mushroom much if any at velocities below 750fps.

RE: I had a thought.
Hornady used to list data for the 250 gr XTP .
I loaded 50 , shot ok .
But did not have enough velosity to expand at 50 ft .
If I remember right MV was just over 700 fps ( loaded over 10 years ago)

I've shot the 260 and 300 partitions and XTP's in my 45 Colt in hunting load territory... i fire through a Ruger Blackhawk Bisley so i push them pretty quickly, 1200+ and they don't like to open up at those velocities... the 45 partitions and 300 XTP are meant more for the 454 Casull where they can be flung in the 1500+ range...

RE: I had a thought.
anything heavier then 230 grain is primarily a revolver load, because the chamber in an auto may not be long enough. but if it chambers fine go for it, would be fun to play with anyway I dont know how effective they would be for a mountain lion..... id imagine it would have considerable lower velocity from lack of powder capacity. My 45 acp hunting loads I use a 185 grain barnes XPB pushing just over a 1000 fps Ive taken a missouri whitetail with it, its also the same load i keep in my gun when hiking just incase some large feline decides he wants me for lunch.

HDW - I forgot about the Barnes bullets. Thanks for that. Mainly is what I want is something that will penetrate into the vitals, and the barnes should surely do that!!

RE: I had a thought.
it sure does penetrate and does massive damage on its way through, that deer i killed was about a 20 yard shot and the bullet made a complete pass through and lodged into a tree on the other side of the deer, the damage to the deers insides looked like a typical 30-30 wound channel i was amazed with the XPB. I cant think of a better bullet for the 45 acp, if i could find factory loaded XPB's id use them in my concealed carry weapon. If anyone knows of a factory loaded 45 acp round with the XPB's let me know.
