Default .308 Win Velocities & BBL Length

I am looking at AR-10s and need some info on velocities vs. barrel lengths for a .308 Win. My choice is between a 24" and 18". Can I get close to max efficiency with an 18" bbl? How much velocity loss can I expect? Only data I have found thus far is with 22-24" bbls.

The faster the bullet goes from a 24" barrel the more velocity it will lose in an 18" barrel. I think I'd prefer the 24", but I've never handlded one, and some shorter barreled rifles just feel right.

The 308 does not loose as much to shorter barrels as some guns do. The fact that it works well in the Encore pistol would be an indicator that they are effective even with short tubes The Encore reaches 2700 fps with a 150 grain bullet in the Nosler manual. That with a 14 inch barrel It reaches nearly 2400 fps with the 165-168 grain bullets.
