Default 25-06

Anyone have any bullet/powder suggestions for a Winchester Model 70 25-06? I was thinking about getting one, then someday gave me one. It didn't like the Remington factory ammo I tried to feed it.

I loaded both 100 grain and 115 grain Nosler Ballistic tips for my Ruger 25-06. Both loads shot under one inch and both hit the same point of Impact at 100 yards. I used the same load as above for the 115. 48.5 grains of IMR 4350. For the 100 Grain I used 54 grains of IMR4831. These loads came from the Nosler Manual Fifth Edition. These are Maximum loads in my Manual so start a few grains less and watch for pressure excess pressure.

My favorite load at the moment is a Speer 120gr Spitzer Hot-Cor in front of 49grns of IMR4350, Fed 210 Primer, Rem Brass. This combination is very accurate in both my 25.06's and has performed excellent on the deer i've shot with it.

MYKEY. How does that combo do for meat damage? Being a 99 percent meat hunter, I have been looking for a load that keeps it down to a minimum. I am having the trigger done on mine right now which should help my shot placement. The triger was a tough six LBs on it before. The smith says he can get it down to three. I know from useing the 7MM mag years ago that shot placement will save more meat than anything. I used to use the Hot Care in my 280 but it did a lot of excess damae as well. One thing for sure, when you hit them with the 25-06, they are going to go down.

James,
I haven't experienced a great deal of meat damage using the Hot-cor but the majority of my shots have been behind the front shoulder and it cleans the vitals out pretty good. The several that i have hit in the shoulder did some damage but it wasn't explosive. I've never used the Ballitic tips so i don't know what the damage would be like compared to those.

I agree 100%!

The Ballistic tips do quite a bit of Damage if you hit a bone of any size but I quess bloodshot meat is the down side. Hits just through the vitals with them is all you could ask of a bullet. This season with that heavy trigger, I had problems placing my shots as well as I should. I shot four big Mule deer does with it and they were all one shot kills but I was always just a tad bit off target. Quess I should have used my 6.5X55 until I got the Ruger trigger worked over. I am going to give the Tripple shocks a try as well. The X bullets kill real well and don't usually do a lot of excess damage.

I've been looking at the Barnes bullets myself for a while now and have thought about giving them a try but was concerned about copper fouling. After reading your other post on the subject looks like from the feedback it isn't as bad as one would think so i may buy some in the off season and give them a try.

Mike I am going to try your load next time I go to the range.I got a 25/06 barrel for my encore last week and took it and my 270wsm(trying the Barnes 130 TSX) to the range today. Will post my target, don't look too good but does look like I will be able to get it to shoot fairly good.
The powder I thought would do the worse did but it did the best too with a different bullet.
I shot the 130 tsx in the 270wsm and was wanting to find out about the cooper left in the barrel too, just cleaned it and there was no more than with any other bullet.Got a couple good groups also,.460&.378 in@100yds.Posted the results on the short mag forum.
I have some 100 gr sierra bullets to try next also.May try the tsx too if I decide to hunt with it.
