Default S/W 500 MAG

Anyone have any good loads for the s/w 500 mag, I've found a few but I like to see what others are having good luck with, and work from there.

Ranger Rick,

Holy cow, man! I pity anything unfortunate enough to be one the receiving end of either your 45-120 or .500 S&W loads! Of course, now that I mention it, I wouldn't want to be behind either of them either!

What kind of velocities are you getting out of the .500 with those bullets (not that it really matters with 1/10th of a pound of lead flying downrange)?

Ranger Rick, I was thinking about starting out with something in the 400gr to 500gr. range. I've used some 600gr in the BFR 45/70. Hows that 45/120 a black power?

Yep that is a chunck of lead to launch down range . The 700gr loaded with 25gr H110 vel at 1125 . Still have a lot of room to play with . It is not as bad as one would think to shoot a pill this size .Your right 10 bullets to a pound and with a cylinder full you have added an extra 1/2 pound to the revolver . That's what keeps the recoil so manageable . You sure drain a 20 pound pot fast when casting these.

Here are a couple of loads
325gr WFNGC , 47 gr LIL Gun = vel 1940
400gr WFNGC , 44.2 gr H110 = vel 1751
495gr WFNGC , 35.5 gr LIL Gun = vel 1570
515gr WFNGC , 37 gr WC 820 = vel 1407

My favorite
700gr WFNGC 25 gr H110 = vel 1125

That 45-120 is a Sharps Buffalo gun loaded with Black powder , lot's of fun to shoot .

What are these loads being shot out of, I have a 4in. on my 500, I use it for a hiking gun. however I cross paths with a lot of bears, just the little blacks not as big as those browns you have runing around. Sure would like to try that sharps out.

Those are some fine looking pieces, we have a gun show this next weekend I'll be looking for dies, brass, and bullets. Should have some good loads to try out, I'll let you know how they do. Thanks Ranger Rick 45/120 for all your help.
