Default 308 reloaded ball. tip....

This question may have a various no. of answers but, how much powder fits into a 308 shell caseing? a friend of mine had just recently given me two boxes of re-loads with ball.tip. now there is NO rattle!! cannot hear powder. he said there a "hot" load, which i'm not exactly sure if i understand what that means. would these be safe to shoot? Just want some thoughts before attempting or not. they would be being shot out of rem mdl 700. thnks for any thoughts, opinions

There ARE a lot of possibilities here. Different powders will fill the same case differently. A max load IMR4064 and 168gr bullets would be about 45gr, while a ball powder like Win748 wouldn't fill the case with that bullet until you hit about 47 or 48gr. And with a large grain extruded powder like 4064, a less than max charge would not necessarily rattle when shaken.

However, unless this guy is someone you know & trust implicitly, I wouldn't shoot any ....................... unless I saw him shoot some in his OWN gun (while standing a safe distance away) and inspected the cases afterward for pressure signs.

thanks to all, ill try and get the recipe for theses shells. just to satisfy my currosity, being i dont know the first thing about re-loading shells. they have a lightish-green polymer tip, the casings look ok, i guess, little tarnished. but as far as them being stressed out, i'm not sure. Ill get the rest of info and post it bk here when i get it. I dont feel like taking any chances on firing any of them. better safe then srry! Alive and well rather then possible mamed or dead. thnks for the help.
-he had said they were ballistic tip.

those would definitely be the Nosler Ballistic Tip 30cal bullets..................but those come in 150 and 168gr versions.......................so you need to know what weight bullet, what type and how much powder.

I'm not sure about the 168gr comment... Nosler BT's come in 150 and 165gr versions if memory serves. Most 30 cal 168's are match grade HP's.

I wouldn't personally shoot someone else's handloads - even if they did give me the recipe.

That's true Quack I think they ARE 165gr not 168.....................not like there is much difference. depends on which brand & which bullet
