Default ever heard of this caliber?

while I was at the gunsmith today, he was telling me about a custom gun that he has to make for a guy. It was a 300 wsm 378,supposedly for out west I think he said the guy was going to use it for sheep. apparently people are cross breeding the 378 with a short mag now? I am confused about this, Isnt it a real hodge podge of mixing? Isnt that the reason the guy from shooting times western developed the stw for long shots on sheep? and if you want to use the .308 bullet why not just get a 30-378. it seems like a alot of trouble creating brass and stuff when there sre plenty of calibers out there to accomidate hunting for sheep.

Are you saying a gunsmith has shortened and blown out a .378 Wby. Mag. case, and seated a .308 cal. bullet in it? Thanks.

theres a guy out here who does all sorts of crazy combinations of wild cat loads like one hes doing now is a 458 win mag necked up to a 375, pushes a 300 gr swift a frame over 3000 fps, I will have to ask him about that wild cat you mentioned see what he says.

I think he means they are necking up the wsm to accept the .375 bullet which would be a 375 WSM?

Why would you do that? I would think you would end up with something that would fall between the old 375 Win and the classic old 375 H&H (which STILL in my opinion is one of THE greatest cartridges of the world). The last thing I would want on a sheep hunt is something that would stomp like a pissed off mule and had the trajectory of a garden hose. Recoil is something to think about when sheep hunting due to the potentially odd shot angles you are likely to encounter. I believe the WSM case starts to lose its pizaaz somewhere around the 8mm size. How would it differ (if any) from the trajectory table of the 358 Win?

Sheep gun? If I wasnt gonna buy anything new I would be totin a custom .280 I have. Sheep arent tough to kill, climbin up there and livin to get a shot is the toughest part!!!

No joke, on sheep I think I would favor a mountain rifle with a 2-7x32mm scope chambered in the following calibers: 250 savage, 25-06 rem, 260 rem, 270 win, 280 rem, 7mm-08 rem or My personal choice of a 308 win. From what I hear when hunting bighorns your shots generally wont be any further then 200 to 300 yards and All those calibers I would think would be more then adequate since bighorns really arent that big of an animal. I've talked to some folks here in arizona who go up north to hunt them and one of the guys uses a remington model 7 in .243 win

To neck up the .300 WSM that far seems like a waste to me, unless the gunsmith is doing something different by lengthening the chamber considerably. The way I see it, by the time you put that long .375 bullet on top, there just isn't much room in the case for powder.
